The Tahitian Lime is a popular small-spreading, evergreen tree with glossy leaves, some thorns, and fragrant creamy-white blossoms. The blossoms are followed by medium-sized, round green fruit with a thin skin and juicy, almost seedless acidic flesh. The limes are ready to pick in winter before the fruit turns yellow.
Ideal as a feature tree in a pot for courtyards or decks, or in smaller, Mediterranean-style gardens. Tahitian Lime grows well in a sunny position with well-drained soil. Water well once the fruit has set - if not, new fruit will drop off. Protect from strong winds, especially during flowering or while the fruit is forming.
The soil needs to be well-watered, well-drained, and slightly acidic with no root competition. The tree requires a balanced feed in spring and plenty of nitrogen and potassium-rich fertilser throughout the year. Keep well watered in dry periods - good long soaks are much better than a quick splash - but it must be free draining or the roots will rot.
The Tahitian Lime can grow to a height of 6m.
